In a remarkable display of efficiency and courage, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under Project Yojak has successfully restored connectivity on the Nimu–Padum–Darcha (NPD) road in Ladakh's Kilima–Chilling sector, which was severely affected by flash floods and landslides.
The disaster struck following sudden cloudbursts and intense rainfall on 20th July 2025, leading to flash floods that triggered massive landslides at KM 92.40, cutting off vital road access in the remote region. The incident left several locals and tourists stranded in the high-altitude terrain of the Union Territory of Ladakh, posing a serious humanitarian and logistical challenge.
Responding swiftly to the crisis, BRO’s Project Yojak mobilized its engineering teams overnight and launched a 50-foot Bailey Bridge at the affected location. Despite the rugged terrain, adverse weather, and high altitude, the bridge was completed and opened to traffic by the following day, restoring crucial connectivity.
This timely intervention not only facilitated the rescue and evacuation of stranded civilians and tourists but also ensured that essential supplies and emergency aid could reach remote villages that had been cut off due to the landslide.
Senior BRO officials praised the ground team for their dedication and speed, while locals and regional authorities expressed deep gratitude for the timely restoration of the route. The NPD road is a strategically important lifeline for interior Ladakh, connecting key regions and aiding in defense logistics, tourism, and local livelihoods.
The BRO’s swift action once again highlights its unwavering commitment to national service, particularly in maintaining and restoring infrastructure in India’s most challenging and remote terrains.
