Dhanbad: A 40-year-old woman from an economically disadvantaged background underwent a successful surgery at Sadar Hospital on Monday after doctors confirmed uterine fibroids during an ultrasound examination.
Hospital Deputy Superintendent Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Prasad said Sunita Kumari, wife of Jageshwar Singh and a resident of Harijan Colony No. 4 under Sijua-Jogta area of Jharia, had been suffering from severe health issues for several months. She experienced excessive menstrual bleeding along with difficulty in urination, leading to acute anemia.
Despite holding an Ayushman card, the family could not access treatment at nearby facilities due to financial constraints. A Sahiya health worker brought her to Sadar Hospital, where gynecologist Dr. Sanjeev conducted further investigations. Ultrasound reports confirmed multiple uterine fibroids, following which she was first given two units of blood before surgery was planned.
On February 9, 2026, Dr. Sanjeev successfully performed an abdominal hysterectomy. The patient’s condition is stable and improving. Anesthetist Dr. Anand, along with OT assistants Madhusudan Marandi and Omprakash, played key roles during the procedure.
Family members said the surgery would have cost ₹50,000 to ₹60,000 at a private hospital, which was beyond their means. Expressing gratitude, they thanked the district administration, Sadar Hospital, and the entire medical team for giving Sunita a new lease of life through timely and compassionate care.
