Veteran tribal leader and former Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Shibu Soren, passed away on Monday after a prolonged illness. He was 81 and breathed his last at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi.
A towering figure in Indian politics, Soren was the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and a relentless voice for tribal rights and statehood. Popularly known as 'Guruji', he played a pivotal role in the creation of Jharkhand and served multiple terms as both Chief Minister and Union Minister.
His demise has plunged Jharkhand into deep mourning, with political leaders across party lines paying tribute. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, his son, called it “an irreparable loss for the state and the tribal community.”
A state funeral and official mourning are likely to be announced soon.
